Wandering Wonderings: Meanwhile in My Blanket Fort

At some point, when our adult lives get hectic, we gleefully reminisce about the simple joys of childhood.  In the middle of our new adult chaos, it is easy to look back and belittle the struggle of that dreaded spelling test or the hurt feelings of not being invited to Susie Sunshine's birthday party at the skating rink.  We like to look back and think that we had no stress....no worries.

The TRUTH is...we had A LOT of stress.  Growing up is no joke.  It is a long, hard, unavoidable process. So why do many of us tend to look back on it so fondly?  I think it is for this reason....

As children, we took advantage of the many outlets available to us to RELIEVE our stress.  Playing outside...being creative (arts and crafts time anyone?)...dress up...games....the list goes on and on and on. As adults, we have forgotten how to be a kid!  Something we did easily for so many years seems to be wiped from our psyche.  We feel GUILTY for doing something we enjoy.  What the heck is up with that?????

Just like children learn to be adults, there comes a point in life when adults need to reclaim the joys of childhood again.

So why do we not indulge in the fun?  Two reasons......1) We don't want to be thought of as "silly".  2) We don't want to clean it up.

By allowing those reasons to get in the way, we are missing out on joy and fun, because we let our "adult" voice take over.

Don't get me wrong....we need to be responsible, honorable, kind, and caring adults.  Things like doing a good job, keeping your word, paying bills on time, providing for your family....and so on....and so on....all really good things.  But these things should not automatically eliminate all things silly and fun.

So I have a challenge for you....

Saturday is the best day in all of childhood, so next Saturday is YOUR day to be a kid.  Yeah, you have stuff to do...blah...blah...blah.  But I CHALLENGE you on Saturday morning....

1) Stay in your PJs

2) Build a blanket fort

3) Watch cartoons

4) Enjoy a "kid" breakfast (ex. cereal,  peanut butter toast, toaster strudels, Eggo waffles, etc.)

FYI....your cell phone is not allowed in the blanket fort.  Unless you are using them to watch cartoons, the tablet and laptop have to stay out as well.

Take ONE HOUR and BE A KID.  Just for an hour.  I think you will find it is time well spent.
